Bee Pollen

During my pregnancy, my wonderful midwife suggested taking bee pollen.

Bee pollen? People take bee pollen?

Yes, and for good reason.
Bee pollen is a super food- containing vitamins (especially your B vitamins you need), amino acids, minerals, and protein! It can boost your immune system, energy, memory, and overall health!

Sounds good, but does it work?

It does for me! I notice a difference when I take my bee pollen, I feel more alert and energetic.

For more information, read these links:

CAUTION: If you have or suspect an allergy to bees do NOT take this supplement. If you are unsure, start slowly at just a few pollen granules at a time and work your way up from there.

Just a reminder...

If you're like me you have stocked up on those reusable canvas grocery bags... but you bring them home and forget them in your house.
Right now- bring them back to your car!
Let's not forget! Every little bit counts- use reusable shopping bags :)

Vinegar

I enjoy already made eco-friendly cleaning products (some I will review in the future), but I've had days where I've run out of my cleaners and needed a back up.
Vinegar! Of course!
Mix 50/50 vinegar and water in a squirt bottle, and add some essential oils to scent it up. I usually use a lemon scent. It works, smells fresh, and it kills germs!
Yes, vinegar kills germs! You can read more about the benefits of vinegar here.

Quick Tip: To kill germs off a sponge, pop it in the microwave for 30 seconds and zap the germs away!

Don't make me gag mum!

Teething, what a trying time for mother and baby. I think most of us have tried those leading brands that make our baby numb. My babies have always gagged, and then had a poor latch on the breast when nursing. And they never did seem to work did they?

My herbologist introduced me to Boiron Camilia. A homeopathic approach to teething.. hmm... I was skeptical. But I'll give anything a fair shot, so I did. Twisted off the top, and dropped some into the mouth of my cranky 4 month old. It seems within a few minutes he really calmed right down. Wait.. how could this be? It doesn't have that strong numbing effect as those other brands, how on Earth is this helping?! I thought it was just a fluke. But sure enough, nearly every time he was cranky, I was able to soothe him with the Camilia.

Here's a glance of what this miracle product consists of:

Other Ingredients
Active Ingredients Purpose
Chamomilla vulgaris 9C HPUS Relieves teething pains accompanied by irritability
Phytolacca decandra 5C HPUS Relieves painful gums
Rheum officinale 5C HPUS Relieves minor digestive disorder associated with teething
The letters HPUS indicate that this ingredient is officially included in the Homeopathic Pharmacopeia of the United States.
Inactive Ingredient: Purified water

Check your local health store to see if they carry it. I'm so glad we've discovered this :)

Cloth diapering

I mentioned cloth diapering in my Welcome post, so why not get right into it now?

I am very new to cloth diapers. I am far from a cloth diaper connoisseur! So take what you will from this cloth newbie :)

Babies go through a lot of diapers, a lot! During the newborn stage they probably go through 10+ a day, at least my kids did. Ever wonder where those diapers go? A landfill. To sit... for about 250-500 years, give or take. I'm not sure the Earth appreciates that.

Disposable diapers are also costly. You will spend easily over $2000 on disposable diapers for your baby. Depending on how conservative and/or frugal you are, cloth diapers will run anywhere from $200-$1000+ (some people like the fancy expensive cloth diapers).

Cloth diapers are better for your baby's skin. Dioxin is not something you want to exposure your child to, however there are chlorine free disposable diapers if you want to stick with disposable diapers.

There is debate as to whether cloth diapering really is better for the environment considering the water usage to wash them. What the studies don't factor in to those numbers though is the energy used to manufacture those millions of disposable diapers everyday. If you're concerned about energy costs in the manufacturing of cloth diapers, there are plenty of moms who sew (and some sell) their own diapers- disposable diapers don't offer that kind of alternative.

I think cloth diapering is worth a shot. I know it's not for everyone, but I think even a crispy mum can handle it.

If you would like to explore the world of cloth diapering further, here is a great forum:

Welcome

Welcome to my blog! Let me tell you about it...
I was laying in bed nursing my 5 month old son, as he drifted off to sleep the gears in my mind began to turn. I was thinking about the new package of cloth diapers I was ordering. Thinking about how it took having FIVE kids before I realized the benefits of cloth diapers over disposables. To be honest, until recently I had never met anyone who cloth diapered, in real life or on the internet. I had never given it a thought! That was a whole other world to me.

I then started thinking about other things I've learned over the years that make up a healthier lifestyle and a greener planet. Wouldn't it be nice to have a friendly place on the net to discuss such things? I say friendly, because often times I notice that "crunchy" forums can be somewhat pretentious at times. There is no need for a holier than thou attitude because most people are not purposely hurting the environment or cheating themselves of a healthier lifestyle, they are simply not aware of the steps to take to make a positive change.

So have a seat and pop some natural popcorn (did you know popcorn is a serotonin boosting food?), and let's explore and spread awareness of a greener life!
